A day trip from Prague to Děčín offers an excellent opportunity to experience one of the most impressive river landscapes in the Czech Republic without requiring a demanding hiking programme.
Prague to DěčínThe journey begins at Prague Main Railway Station (Praha hlavní nádraží). Direct trains run from Prague to Děčín, with the journey normally taking approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
The railway line follows the Elbe valley for part of the journey, so even before arriving in Děčín the landscape gradually changes from the urban surroundings of Prague to the hills, forests, and river scenery of northern Bohemia.
Děčín is particularly interesting because of its relationship with water. The city lies directly on the Elbe River, one of the major rivers of Central Europe, and several smaller rivers, including the Ploučnice, join the Elbe in the city. Děčín therefore has a strong historical connection with river transport, trade, and travel.
DěčínOn arrival, it is possible to spend approximately 45–60 minutes seeing the centre of Děčín and the riverfront.
The most characteristic view is that of Děčín Castle, standing high above the Elbe. From the river area, visitors can see the castle, bridges, surrounding hills, and the broad river valley.
Děčín is also the natural gateway to the landscape of Bohemian Switzerland. Immediately north of the city, the Elbe enters a dramatic sandstone landscape of forested slopes, cliffs, rock towers, and deep valleys.
Suggested Short Private ExcursionFor three people, particularly if one traveller is 75 years old, I would suggest a private excursion by car or minivan lasting approximately 4–5 hours.The idea would not be to undertake a traditional hiking tour, but rather a comfortable scenic excursion with several short stops.
A suitable route could be:Děčín → Elbe Valley → Labská Stráň → Belveder Viewpoint → Hřensko → short walk and lunch → return through the Elbe Canyon → DěčínThe Elbe Canyon
The central natural feature of the excursion is the Elbe Canyon.
North of Děčín, the river cuts deeply through the sandstone landscape. The canyon reaches approximately 300 metres in depth and is described by the Děčín tourist authority as the deepest sandstone canyon in Europe.
The scenery is very different from the broad river landscapes one may associate with the lower Elbe. Here, the river is enclosed by forested slopes and huge sandstone cliffs.
The landscape combines several elements:• the wide surface of the Elbe River;• steep forested slopes;• sandstone walls and isolated rock towers;• small settlements along the river;• distant hills of Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland.
The road from Děčín towards Hřensko follows this river landscape, so much of the scenery can be experienced directly from the vehicle without strenuous walking.
Belveder ViewpointOne of the best stops for this kind of excursion would be Belveder, near the village of Labská Stráň.
Belveder is one of the oldest developed viewpoints in Bohemian Switzerland. From its rock terrace there is a panoramic view directly into the Elbe Canyon and towards the sandstone mountains on the Czech-German border.
This viewpoint is particularly suitable for an easier excursion because it can be approached by car along a paved road, with only a very short walk required near the viewpoint.
From here, one can see the Elbe far below, surrounded by forests and sandstone formations. It is probably one of the best places in the region for appreciating the relationship between the river and the surrounding landscape without a demanding hike.
A stop of approximately 30–45 minutes should be sufficient.
HřenskoThe excursion could then continue to Hřensko, a small settlement situated directly beside the Elbe close to the German border.
Hřensko is surrounded by steep sandstone walls and forested valleys and is one of the traditional gateways to Bohemian Switzerland.
The location is especially interesting because two very different river landscapes meet here.
The large Elbe River forms the main valley, while the much smaller Kamenice River enters Hřensko through a narrow sandstone gorge.
This provides an opportunity to see both the broad international river valley and the much smaller mountain-river environment within a relatively short distance.
A leisurely walk around Hřensko could take approximately 30–45 minutes, depending on the participants.
LunchLunch could be arranged in Hřensko or another nearby village.
For an older traveller, this would also provide a useful break before the return journey.
Approximately 60 minutes could be reserved for lunch.
Optional Short WalkAfter lunch, one short and relatively easy walk could be included.
The exact location should ideally be chosen by the guide according to weather conditions and the physical condition of the group.
The intention would be to experience the forest, sandstone cliffs, and river landscape at close range rather than to reach the more demanding famous attractions such as Pravčická brána.
For this excursion, I would recommend limiting individual walks to approximately 15–30 minutes at a time.
An Alternative: Seeing the Landscape from the River
If boat services are operating on the chosen date, another particularly attractive possibility is to include part of the excursion on the Elbe itself.
Děčín promotes sightseeing cruises through the Elbe Canyon towards Hřensko and further into Saxon Switzerland. The river offers a completely different perspective: from the boat, the sandstone walls and forested slopes rise above the traveller rather than being viewed from above.

For a group including a 75-year-old traveller, the route can be organised almost entirely by car, with short walks and frequent stops. It therefore offers a good combination of impressive scenery, rivers, nature and comfort without the physical demands of a full hiking excursion.
