War, Soil, and Freshwater Systems. Conference Prague, 15–17 October 2026
Integrated Concept for the Study of the “War–Pollution-Soil–Freshwater–Disease” Nexus: Conference – Monograph – Annual Cycle
General PositionThis conference is conceived not as a one-time academic event, but as the initial step in a long-term, cumulative research process. At the same time, we proceed with a realistic understanding: it is unlikely that all elements of this model will be fully realized during the first conference. However, the direction is clearly defined — to move step by step toward a structured, collective, and internationally coordinated research framework. This work is driven by a simple observation: there is both a clear need for deeper understanding and clear limitations in how research is currently organized. We operate at the intersection of these two realities.
Focus of the ResearchThis initiative is focused on understanding the interconnected system: “war – pollution - soil – freshwater – human health”.The aim is not political interpretation, but a consistent expert-based analysis of environmental processes and their consequences. At the same time, we recognize that this field contains significant gaps, unresolved questions, and limited coordination between existing studies. The objective is therefore not only to collect knowledge, but to begin structuring it.
Conference as a Starting PointThe conference is designed as a moderately guided expert process, where:• contributions are not isolated presentations• discussions are structured and partially prepared in advance• moderators play an active analytical role• all materials are embedded into a shared framework. At the same time, the process remains open:• new insights may emerge• unexpected perspectives are possible• the structure allows controlled flexibility. The aim is not to eliminate uncertainty, but to work with it in a structured scientific manner.
From Conference to MonographA key outcome of the conference will be a collective scientific monograph, prepared within the PD Book Series. https://pd-book-series-ojs.org/index.php/pdbs The monograph is scheduled for publication in December 2026.
Beyond Simple PublicationThe monograph is not intended as a standard collection of conference papers. Its purpose is to:• integrate and critically process discussions• allow authors to revise and strengthen their contributions• incorporate comparative insights across different cases• produce a coherent scientific result. All conference sessions will be recorded and made available to participants. These materials will support the further development of texts.
From Articles to a Higher-Level SynthesisThe monograph is designed to go beyond individual contributions. It is not a repetition of existing articles, but a step to a higher analytical level. The task is to:• identify common patterns• connect different cases• highlight contradictions and research gaps• integrate soil, water, and health into a unified perspective. In this sense, the monograph represents a second-level scientific synthesis.
Inclusive ParticipationThere is no distinction between in-person and online participants. We recognize that participation conditions differ due to:• military situations• visa restrictions• financial limitations. All contributors will have equal opportunity to participate in the monograph. The publication process will be fully supported and free of charge for authors. This is essential to ensure that important empirical knowledge is not excluded from scientific circulation.
Annual ContinuityThe conference is planned as a recurring annual event. New empirical cases will continue to emerge in different regions of the world. However, the core approach remains unchanged. The focus is not on individual events, but on systemic processes:• methodological challenges• long-term environmental transformations• soil and water systems• impacts on human health.
Cumulative DevelopmentEach conference contributes to a broader trajectory:• the first conference establishes the framework• subsequent conferences test and refine it• each year adds new empirical material• each monograph reflects the current level of understanding. At the same time, each new volume is expected not to repeat, but to rethink and advance previous knowledge.
Toward Research and ProjectsThe goal of this process is not limited to discussion. It includes:• advancing understanding• identifying research gaps• forming international research groups• initiating joint projectsThis transition — from discussion to structured research — is a central element of the concept.
Final PerspectiveThe conference, the monograph, and the annual process form a single system. This system can be described as a structured, expert-driven exploration where:• knowledge is accumulated step by step• results are critically re-evaluated• new levels of understanding are achievedThe goal is not to produce isolated outputs, but to build a coherent and evolving body of scientific knowledge.
