War, Soil, and Freshwater Systems. Conference Prague, 15–17 October 2026

Conference Sessions

The conference programme is organised through two complementary structures. The guiding questions formulated for Days 1–3 establish the main progression of the conference: from examining what is actually known, through identifying appropriate methods of investigation, to defining practical forms of cooperation and future work. The thematic sessions provide an additional layer of organisation by bringing together presentations concerned with related subjects. These sessions are interconnected rather than isolated, and they should not be understood as separate collections of unrelated questions.
Some presentations may appear in more than one thematic session. This is not a contradiction or duplication, but a reflection of the nature of the problem. War-related environmental and public-health consequences cross disciplinary, geographical, temporal, and institutional boundaries. A single contribution may therefore be relevant to several parts of the shared investigation.
The conference does not assume that all essential questions have already been correctly formulated, nor does it present its participants as experts possessing complete solutions that require only additional funding. Its purpose is to determine what is known, what remains uncertain, how existing knowledge is connected, and what forms of evidence, cooperation, and field investigation are required. The sessions should therefore be read as overlapping perspectives within a common effort to understand and address the environmental and human consequences produced by war.

Human and Societal Legacies of War: Veterans, Families, Communities, Memory, and Contested Heritage
This session examines the long-term human and societal consequences of war, including the effects of war-related contamination on veterans, families, and affected communities, as well as intergenerational trauma, contested burial sites, conflicting memories, and the transformation of monuments and other forms of difficult heritage. Through concrete cases from different countries and historical periods, the session seeks to identify common patterns in the persistence, recognition, and management of war legacies.
